Wanna know something cool? When it comes to all those neat benefits, your body actually can't tell the difference between real and fake laughter!
What is laughter wellness?
Laughter Wellness (aka Laughter Yoga) is a structured exercise (much like a yoga or aerobics class), but instead of poses it is a combination of intentional laughter exercises and yogic breathing (you know, like what you do while meditating). Anyone can do this - no need to crack a joke or watch a funny movie. Through doing these exercises, maintaining eye contact, and letting yourself remember what it was like to be a kid, there's a good chance that that laughter will be become super real and super contagious!
To get all those fun benefits, laughter has to be loud and deep (that thing called a "belly laugh"). We might not always feel comfortable laughing loudly in public, but Laughter Wellness groups provide a safe environment where you can laugh as loud as you want, as much as you want.
Originally created by Dr. Madan Kataria, an Indian physician from Mumbai, in 1995. Today, it has become a worldwide phenomenon with more than 6000 social laughter clubs in 65+ countries!
Why is it good for me?
You learn to laugh more and laugh better...
Laughter Wellness helps to change your mood by releasing those things called endorphins. You'll stay in a good mood throughout the day and will laugh more than you normally do.
Laughter is actually an aerobic exercise...
It has a lot of the same elements of a cardio workout. You'll get more oxygen to your body and brain. That'll make you feel more energized and relaxed.
You give yourself a chance to laugh even when life sucks...
Everyone can laugh when life is going great, but how do you laugh when things are not so great? Laughter helps put you in a more positive mental state, which lets you better deal with negative situations and face negative people. Even a little bit of a laughter a day can give you the hope and optimism to cope with difficult times.
